ataste welcomes its newest team member: Wim Deputter, a thoroughbred martial artist. Wim has been practicing and perfecting various disciplines for years. His specialty is without a doubt Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ). A sport that focuses on ground techniques in which one tries to submit his opponents through chokes and locks. BJJ is considered one of the most effective martial arts, hence the great success of experienced BJJ practitioners in MMA tournaments. MMA - Mixed Martial Arts - is a sport that combines techniques from different martial arts (boxing, muay thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, wrestling etc) to distinguish the most complete fighter.
Wim boasts a remarkable fight record (both in BJJ, Grappling, MMA, Capoeira, Muay Thai), because of the high number of victories. As an MMA fighter he fought, amongst many other places, in Seoul (M1 challenge) and Dublin (Cage Rage). Most of his wins are due to his first class submission skills. He is also a popular teacher at courses and seminars in which he shares his experience and techniques. Currently a brown belt (under Felipe Costa) he trains nearly every day at BJJ-Exit (Leuven). His character can be described as calm, modest and very hospitable.
Wim is also -like many BJJ practitioners- an açaí aficionado. Since the founding of BJJ there has been a link with acai. According to various sources it was Carlos Gracie (born in Belem and one of the pioneers of BJJ) who introduced acai outside the Amazon. Because of Wim's daily intensive training sessions, a balanced diet is essential. This makes the nutritious acai a perfect addition to his vegetarian diet. Acai, with its low glycemic index, provides a quick replenishing of vitamins, fiber, minerals, omega fatty acids and antioxidants. Oh, and of course it helps that he finds it finger licking good!
